Our approach
Communication
Many problem behaviors are the result of an inability to communicate effectively and in a socially appropriate manner. It can be understandably frustrating for individuals with Autism to feel like they can't express themselves efficiently. We teach kids how to communicate their wants and needs without having to resort to aggression, tantrums, property destruction, or other challenging behaviors.
Social Skills
Appropriate socialization is crucial for child development. A lack of social skills can lead to behavior problems at school, social isolation, and difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment in the future. We provide children the tools needed to make friends, learn appropriate behavior around others, and methods to stand up for themselves against potential bullies or unfair treatment.
School Readiness
Success in school requires a lot more than intelligence and the ability to complete work. Students are expected to sit and pay attention for long periods of time, to follow directions, and remain quiet while the teacher is speaking. We teach students to comply with adult demands, complete work that they may not enjoy, follow schedules and classroom routines, and how to ask for help when needed.
Parent Training
At Helix, we believe parent training is a crucial component of Autism therapy. That’s why we pride ourselves in giving parents the tools to continue implementing interventions and teaching procedures long after we’re gone. Additionally, we work with parents every step of the way to make sure they understand our recommendations and the rationale behind them, and only work with children in the ways parents approve and are comfortable with.
managing and preventing challenging behavior through in-home aba and autism therapy
There are many advantages to conducting ABA services in the home setting. Most importantly, it allows our Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Registered Behavior Technicians to work with the child in his or her natural setting. This significantly increases the probability that positive behavior changes will be made and maintained. Although clinic-based services can still be effective, the skills and behaviors learned at clinics do not always transfer to the home or other locations. There is a greater chance these skills and behaviors will lead to ongoing life changes because they are being taught in the very place at which the child spends most of his or her time. Additionally, in-home therapy allows for greater parent participation and oversight, which helps to ensure parents are comfortable with and knowledgeable about what is being taught to their children.
school-based ABA and autism services
Helix Autism Therapy also provides services at schools when approved by insurance and allowed by the school. This can be extremely useful in altering problem behaviors and skill deficits in the educational setting. While the home is the natural environment in which children spend the most time, school is where they spend the second most amount of time. At school, we are able to efficiently work on attending, independent work completion, following teacher instructions, as well as a plethora of social skills both inside and outside of the classroom. For schools or insurances that do not allow for intensive ABA therapy, we still recommend a strong team approach in which the parents, BCBA, and school staff all collaborate to ensure consistency and stability across locations. This also helps us to develop interventions that are realistic for teachers and other school staff to implement.
